The Lalor Estate in Dunnville is a heritage property built in 1905. When its roof needed replacing, the owners wanted a metal roof that would honour this heritage home’s original slate look and last for generations. So they chose Armadura steel shingles in a slate profile, and the heritage board approved it.
Project Challenges
Heritage homes come with extra rules. Any new roof had to suit the estate’s historic character and win approval from the heritage board. At the same time, it needed to stand up to snow, ice and freeze-thaw cycles with far less upkeep than real slate.
What We Installed
We installed Armadura steel shingles in Harvest Mountain Slate, a colour chosen to match the look of the original slate. The owners worked with the heritage board, and the board approved the roof. Like every roof we install, the panels lock together on all four sides and go directly on the deck with hidden fasteners. That means no strapping to rot, no exposed screws to loosen and no slates to crack or slip. Armadura is also made in Ontario and carries a 50-year non-prorated warranty.
Harvest Mountain Slate has since been discontinued. Today, Armadura’s premium Rustic Slate colour gives a very similar look.
The Result
The estate kept its historic look, and its new roof won’t need replacing for generations. For other heritage homes, it shows that a steel roof can satisfy a heritage board and still be far easier to live with than slate.
